What Do You Think?

What do you think are the top three spiritual priorities of your life? I would really like to know what and where you are in your journey.  What is it that God has taught or is teaching you?  I know that most people have some spiritual priorities.

These spiritual priorities are the things that get your attention when nothing else does. What are yours?  I am going to use this question to try and have a little running dialogue blog, so I will be sharing a little more about my top three as I respond to your comments.  I am not sure that there is a right or wrong answer here – it all kinda depends on where God has you and what God is teaching you, so don’t be afraid to share honestly!

By the way my top three right now as of this moment are: 1.) Quiet Time – which consist of prayer and Scripture meditation, application and journaling.  2.) Study through reading and listening to other teachers/preachers!  3.) Discipleship – sharing what I know with others to try and facilitate growth in their personal relationship with Christ.  I have a few others that are on my radar screen and may be coming into the top three – they are Scripture memory, personal witness and more focused discipleship!

Please help me out with this one – what are your top three spiritual priorities and why?

  1. Number one is the same as yours – Quiet time. I really want my relationship with God to grow. Number two is discerning God’s call on my life. He has really had something on my heart for the last couple of weeks or so, and I want to make sure it’s Him I hear and not me. Number three is prayer. I’m trying to talk to God about even the little things in my everyday life.

    1. It is amazing what just a little bit of time with God does for your life! When it comes to God’s call, I think one of the things that many of us miss out on – is the reality that God has called all of us to use the gifts, skill and talents that He has given for His glory. Follow the path that He has you on and He will walk you to where He wants you to be. The other thing that I would encourage when trying to work out or understand God’s call is talk with people – get feedback! There is wisdom to be gained from the comments and insights of others! I like the “Pray Without Ceasing” deal. I start praying before I get out of bed and don’t really end my prayer until I get back into bed at night – prayer is all about having conversation with God! Good words David – thanks for sharing!

      1. I smile when you remind us of “prayer without ceasing”…Iknow I’m not the only person who does this so I’m not afraid to share it. (my friend Debbie shared a similar experience) All day long I seem to have a continuous “running” prayer and I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and remember to say, “In Jesus name, Amen”. Then it starts over… =)

  2. Number one is also quiet time with me. I can really tell when I haven’t been spending time in the word. I tend to get “me centered” instead of “Him centered”.
Which leads to my second priority, being a good witness and not a stumbling block for others. For me that’s a hard balance some days and I could write pages on that subject!
And thirdly, being thankful for His blessings in my life and not taking anything for granted. But for the grace of God where would I be?

    1. Teresa – it really does show when we miss time with God – we just can’t hide it! We may still be able to talk that spiritual talk, but it is hard to walk that walk if you are not investing time with the Savior. You said it perfect – we become “me centered”, instead of God centered”! I also want to be a good witness – I want to specifically be a witness that helps people cross the bridge from death to life! God is good and I know that I often take so much for granted – thanks for the reminder to be grateful! God’s Grace Is Amazing! Thanks for sharing so early this morning!

  3. Reading my Bible and using scripture to talk to the Lord. Letting go of any and all things that hinder my relationship with the Lord. (I can’t have a close & intimate relationship with Jesus and harbor things in my heart that are completely opposite of what the Bible teaches me.) I so desire to bring honor to the Lord and not bring shame to Him and His work. Only thru His strength & His power can this be accomplished.

    1. The Word is foundational! When we read it and apply it as truth – it sets us free! Letting go is easier said than done! It is only by the power of the Spirit in and through us that we are able to let go and be obedient to God’s Word. I don’t think we can really accomplish forgiveness and restoration without first being forgiven by God and restored to Him. It is a good spiritual priority to make sure that we are right with God and with others so that we can let the Spirit flow!

  4. What I’m working toward, not what I have been successful doing:
    1. Listening – I talk too much, to people AND to HIM… I’m trying hard to listen for what He wants to say TO me.
    2. Learning – Bible reading/study. Books and magazines… I’m amazed at what He can use to teach me things I never thought of.
    3. Action – I’m so tired/dismayed at the lack of concern for the lost “the church” seems to display. Time keeps flying by, we keep losing the battle for souls because we are “planning/studying” an idea or strategy… let’s go and tell!! They are not going to “come” until we GO!!

    1. Listening is hard to do in our world today! Everybody is talking and there is so much noise! Listening is hard work, but it is worth it! Amazing to think that God often speaks in a whisper, so we need to make sure that we are in a place to listen. There is so much to learn and so many wonderful resources available – especially with the internet! I like to use Google Reader to keep up with a number of different blogs that are meaningful to me. I also have several podcast that I love to download and listen to whenever I get a chance. Reaching the lost and helping them to grow in and through a personal relationship is one that God has really been working on in my life. He commands us to go and “MAKE” Disciples – we’ve got much work to do. Great to see and hear God speaking very similar things to people’s hearts!

  5. Number one is my Quiet Time. I like to start my day out with God and learning from his word. Number two is obedience. To tell you the truth, I’m afraid not to be obedient. I just want to serve God in whatever capacity I can. Number three is Faithfulness. God has been so faithful to me how can I not be faithful to him. He has blessed me beyond measure. I know he loves me so much and I love him and want to glorify and honor him always.

    1. I am so glad to hear you say this about a Q.T. And you are right on target when you follow up your Q.T. with obedience. God has been speaking to my heart about our having a healthy fear of Him. Our world has forgotten what it is to fear God. When we have the proper fear – it will always motivate us to obey! Because He is faithful to me – I long to be faithful to Him. Thanks Jerri – I am so excited to have had the opportunity to witness your spiritual growth over the past several years and I am so thankful for God’s miracles in your life!

  6. The single, most important priority is to spend quality time with God in study and prayer on a consistent basis. I have seen God work in amazing ways when I do this. Pulling the family together for family devotions falls here as well.
Secondly, turning life’s issues over to God, especially those I have no control over. But God has called me to pray without ceasing. I will follow your idea of beginning before I get out of bed and ending the prayer when I lie down.
Third on my list is to be a Godly example for my wife and children, and to all those I encounter. I must choose to please Him whether I am in this body or away. He is the example I must follow to live in His blessings and be a blessing to others.

MJ, thanks for helping me in my pursuit of Right Direction!!

    1. Consistency is key! Thanks for reminding us! Also I think we tend to leave out our families. It is hard work to schedule your life so that you can take and make time to help your family and have your family help you in the pursuit of spiritual growth! Turning it over to God and letting go is really tough, but it is very necessary. As men – we need to be leaders to our families. As we follow the example of Christ we will be great examples for our families, friends and the world! Thank you for sharing and for chasing Right Direction!

  7. 1)Prayer: God is teaching me the importance of prayer. I never really understood prayer before. Now I realize that it is one of the most important and productive aspects of my walk with Him. It’s even more important than I think many of us really understand or realize. It’s necessary in so many ways. It’s the most intimate part of my relationship with Him. 2)Bible reading: I’ve been reading my Bible straight through since January 2008. (I don’t know how people get through in 1 year!) But I’m almost done. I’m amazed at what God has taught me and told me through His Word. There is so much I never knew. I plan to read it over and over and over again. I love it! I do need to work on the meditation aspect of it, though. 3)Fixing my faults: This is the hardest priority. God has told to me the things I need to work on. You know, those traits and conditions that plaque a person all of their life….those things that only that person can fix…..the things that hinder. None of them are quick fixes, of course. With God all things are possible! He motivates me to continue working on them. He helps me. I’m so grateful that He is patient and loves me unconditionally.

  8. Wow! Where to start? Fourteen months ago I would have told you. 1) Being true to God. 2) Sharing the gospel with as many as I could. 3) Being the example to others that a Christian should be. After a year of tasting the under-sole of walking in pain I never thought could be possible, and then reaching the mountain top of Gods Grace, it’s changed a whole lot. Now 1) Find the heart of God and his purpose for me here on earth. That sounds kind of general but it’s not to me. With out this part of the equation in place first how do I know what to do next or how I should get there? I do this by lots and lots of prayer, studying Gods word as often as possible and being around support groups that help feed this desire. 2) Lead the family God has placed and entrusted into my care in a scriptural, faith based life that will help them find God’s purpose for their lives. 3) Inspire as many people as I can to ask the hard questions about their status in life, their standing in the eyes of God. Not the world’s status which can disappear in a flash, but the point in which we know what our effectiveness has been and should be for the cause of Christ. It all may change tomorrow but in the here and now I have to know who I am for God, make sure to ones I have charge of are living their lives according to God’s plan (as best a person can do for another person), and try not to miss any “Gods calls” to action. I’m not sure I answered the question or not, I think I did.

  9. When I’m working I listen to podcast sermons on my iphone. Recently i found the Bible in a year podcast and will be starting it next week.

  10. For me my top three would be:
    1) Quiet Time. I read my bible in the morning, but need to listen to God more to see what he is saying to me from His word.
    2) Obedience. I need to do what I hear God speaking to my heart.
    3) Trust. I need to trust that my family and I are in God’s hand, and that is the safest place we could be.
I want my relationship with Jesus to grow daily, and I know it’s not going to if I’m not close to him. All of these things I think, would help me get closer to him.

  11. TOP PRIORITY: COMMUNICATION WITH THE TRINITY!
MY/OUR HEAVELNLY FATHER, HIS PRECIOUS SON JESUS CHRIST & THE HOLY SPIRIT. WE START OUR DAY WITH MEDITATION (YES, WE DID THIS EVEN WHEN WE HAD TO GET UP IN THE ‘WEE’HOURS). THE TIME SPENT IN PRAYER, PRAISE & READING OF GODS HOLY WORD ‘OPEN’ THE DOOR OF GUIDANCE, WISDOM & DISCERNMENT FOR US.
    2. PUTTING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD:
EPHESIANS 6:13-18: DR. CHARLES STANLEYS “PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD”, APRIL 29,2007..OPENED MY HEART & MIND TO THE EXTREME NEED FOR ALL CHRISTIANS TO ‘BE PREPARED’ AS SATAN GOES ABOUT HIS DAILY BUSINESS OF TAKING OUR FOCUS OFF PRIORITY #1.
    3. GET FIRST 2 RIGHT & EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS INTO LINE…IF WE ALWAYS REMEMBER…WE ARE GODS ‘FALLEN’ CREATION. ITS ONLY HIS AMAZING GRACE THAT ‘FORGIVES’WE SINNERS. THAT SHOULD KEEP US HUMBLE ENOUGH TO KEEP OUR PRIORITIES RIGHT…..IF NOT, GUESS WHAT? SATAN WILL FIND A WAY TO HUMBLE YOU & TURN YOUR WORLD UPSIDE DOWN!
